Is The End of Small Business On Facebook Happening?
When Facebook first created Brand, Fan, and Business Pages a few years ago, small businesses along with Fortune 500 Companies started creating their online presence on the biggest social media platform to hit the internet. With over 1 Billion users it was the smart thing to do. Small Business owners started building large followings on their pages and creating engaging content for their fans that followed their page. However since Facebook has went public they have been looking at ways to increase their revenue and share prices.
At first we started seeing more and more ads in our personal news feeds, and why we had the option to promote a post on our business or fan pages, if you had over 500 Likes on your page your posts usually hit close to 30% of those people if not more depending on the engagement the post received. This was allowing small businesses to keep in contact with their customer base and keeping their brand in the minds of customers that were looking for their services. Back in December they rolled out a new algorythym that cut that organic views down to 6% by the end of last month. So if you are the local grocery store down the street and you have lets say 4,000 Fans/Likes on your page your average post is only going to reach 240 people depending on the time your Fans are on the internet. So you can proably cut that down by another 10 % of the 240.

So with that being said in order for Small Businesses to get seen on Facebook they will have to create more engaging posts so their posts are shared organically by their fans. Otherwise Small Businesses will have to start paying to promote their posts, filling the pockets of Facebook and their share holders. Will you pay to promote ads on Facebook? Will this be part of your marketing budget?
What we have started to do here at New Simple Marketing is, why we still use our Facebook Page we are putting more of our content out on Google Plus. The reason we were so big on using Facebook Fan pages was for SEO puproses. Well a couple of years back Facebook stopped having their real time search pushed out through Google, and started using BING as their official off site search engine. So with that being done, and now organic views being cut, we needed to start looking for a way to get our content out socially and for SEO purposes in building traffic to our sites. This is why we are focusing more on utlizing Google Plus as our social media site of choice.
Google Plus helps builds your small business, and or brand as an authority based on your content and how its shared around their site, pushing not only your posts up in Search results, but your brand, and website as well.
See ourGoogle Plus Page for marketing updates, SEO News, and things that help drive traffic to your brand and website.
One thing that can really help you reach your bottom line goals is to periodically review your marketing. Not just your marketing budget but your over all marketing as a whole and see what is working and what is not.
Sometimes you feel its difficult to see if your marketing is paying off or not. These simple steps will give you a better handle on that.
Take a look at your income- For starters your sales should be going up. Depending on your business and what industry you are in will determine what other factors you look at. Some of these factors are : How many leads your generating, are your billable hours also increasing with your sales, if you run a hotel do you see an increase in phone and online reservations etc. Make sure you look at all venues that will measure income.
Ask your Customers- Most business loose out on this becuase they just don't do it. Why not ask your new customers or leads how they found out about you? This right here will let you know if some of your marketing is paying off or not.
Do your Promotions Produce Direct Sales- When your running a special, or a promotion of a certain product of service, does it generate the fast direct response that your looking to achieve? If not then the venues your using are not working that well for this kind of advertisement.
Is your Marketing helping you sell?- Your marketing should be focused around your brand, product and services and should really give the potential client a great look what what your offering. If your marketing does not reflect your brand, product and services then your just throwing money down the drain.
Check your competition- Look around and see what your competition is doing. I know that most of us want to be unique but when your competition is taking business away from you then you need to see what they are doing, and what you can do to get the upper hand. It does not hurt to talk to your competition to see what marketing venues works for them. You will be surprised to see how many managers out there like to talk and boast on how they are raising sales for their business.
Keeping Your Marketing Fresh
When reviewing your plan you also need to ask yourself are you using the most relevant forms of marketing? Take this as an example for what I am talking about. Do you have a Facebook Page for your business? Do You have a blog? What about a Twitter Account?
If you are not using social media now, then you are way behind. Times of the internet are changing in a ways, that websites are still a valuable tool, but social media represents 60 percent in the decision making on choosing a brand, or buying a service. The day of referral has been taking place of a new form, and is going to change commerce the way we know it today.
Using Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr can be time consuming, so its always best that you assign these tasks to a key member of your team to take care of for you. Create the policy, culture, and what you want to utilize social media for, whether its for customer service, new items, new services, or all of these make sure you portray your business professionally on these powerful marketing sites.
Book mark our blog or subscribe to our RSS feed, since the change to social is becoming more of a foot hold on marketing, we will be writing a lot more on this subject in the future.
Why marketing on Social Media sites like Facebook can bring you in a great deal of leads, and make you a tons of money, it cant be done by doing SPAM.
Why there is a proper time and place to post your business opportunity there is never a time or place to spam your time line with it, so it cloggs up everybodies news feed.
This will do two things. 1. It will cause you to loose followers and friends, and 2. It will violate the TOS of Facebook and get your account suspended and later on shut down. So think before you start sending the same message with the same link every hour on the hour, and not post anything else to your Facebook Time Line.
Social Media Is About Being Social and Connecting
When marketing your business on Facebook and other Social Media sites you want to make sure your giving your followers value, and not cram something down their throats. This has been said over and over again, that people do not follow business opportunities, they follow people. So if you are marketing a MLM or Network Marketing opportunity you want to protray yourself as the expert of the subject and show people that their is a value to you, and then they will see the value of your product/service and once they get to know you a bit better, they sign up!
Dont attack people that suggest you could do things better. This just shows that you cant take constructive criticsm and act like a baby instead of a busines person. I had a gentelman that use to be on my Facebook as a friend that was sharing information about a business opportunity he signed up for. He was looking to get others to sign up under him as well. One thing he was mentioning in his post was that this new website launched without a pre launch, and with out the hype, however little did he know that posting the same two posts on his timeline mind you was creating hype, and making him look desperate because for days on his time line this is all you see. I mention to him that what he was doing could be hurting him, and he attacks me saying that I have no life, and I am not successful. Needless to say I almost fell out of my desk chair laughing and a few of my friends and clients did as well. I guess my 11 years of marketing and online marketing experience has been a waste LOL.
Remember when your trying to attract leads to you, everything you say and do on Social Media sites is out there for everybody to see, and if you set the bad example about yourself, then how can people take you seriously about your business? Its something to think about before you do your next post, or decide that your just going to promote instead of be engaging.
