Websites Past, Today and Future
At first websites were made to create a presence for a business or organization online. These first sites would be considered boring by today's standards. They did not have any multimedia or interaction from the user. Some were just a way for a business or organization to display information for users to see. With the new millennium, came a new type of website – the blog. While blogs are basically just journal entries created by a user, they are also websites. Tools such as Blogger and WordPress offered users the ability to create a blog, or website, without having to have the knowledge of writing the code.
Websites could now be created by anyone, no matter what level of computer expertise a user had. With the introduction of video, pictures, and sound; this dullness quickly faded. Sites could now grab a user's attention by having video and sound automatically play when a user opened a website. Multimedia was using mainly Adobe Flash to display content. While this content could more easily grab the attention of a user, the Flash content was not getting indexed the same way with search engines. This made it more difficult for users to find the content using a search engine. With all the information available on the internet, users wanted to be able to access needed information without having to go through automatically playing video or sound. Websites became interactive so that users could quickly access the information they needed. Once users were able to access information at the touch of a finger with their computers, along came the mobile platforms. With mobile platforms such as Android, iOS, and Windows; users were now able to access email, social media, and browse websites.
Many websites were not mobile compatible so developers had to develop mobile friendly websites or lose out on potential customers. Today we are in the age of social media with platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, and Pinterest. Many users use these tools not only to communicate with family and friends, but also to keep up to date with their favorite business or organization.
Businesses can now use these tools to keep customers up to date on the latest trends, items, and special sales. These platforms are offered free to the public and even for businesses and organizations. That means that businesses need not pay for marketing on them. Now they would have to pay someone to create the content that would be displayed on these platforms, but actually putting the content on them is free. Businesses and organizations can get an enormous return on their investment by using these platforms. Creating a website and displaying content just once will not work for any business or organization. Fresh content needs to be added frequently so that users will have something new to grab their attention. The more content that is indexed for a business or organization, the more likely it is to be found using a search engine. Most users will not scroll past 3-5 pages when searching for information. If a business or organization does not show up in those first 3-5 pages, they may not be found by users at all.
